Since 1999 NDS driving
school instructors have been successfully serving the Putney

information to develop your core
driving skills and key driving competencies. This
information has been provided by our Government Approved and
Registered driving instructors. This is a valuable resource
that is normally paid for.
Areas to learn about
driving controls and moving off & stopping
It is always best for those
starting from the beginning to be relaxed and safe on a nice
quiet side road, there are many roads around Putney and
Roehampton SW15. Parkmead Road or Dover Park Drive off Dover
House Road is suitable place.
Areas to learn Left &
Right turns and emerging at T- Junctions
Our Instructors recommend
doing a circuit which ideally starts with a combination of
repeated left and right turns. We can do this on Parkmead
Road
using Dover House Road, Westmead and on to Dover Park Drive. Continuing on you can then turn right
at Westmead on to Longwood Drive and naturally bending right on to
Coppice Drive and then turning right back on to Dover House
Road. A
figure of eight can be performed to learn both elements;
this area is good for both intermediate and beginner level and a good
place to learn Emerging, MSPSL, Creeping Forward from
Give way lines, Steering control, Accuracy and Confidence.
Areas to learn about
Roundabouts
The roundabouts at Castello
Way, Hazlewell Road and Chartfield Avenue are an excellent place to teach
about priorities and appropriate signals at mini
roundabouts. Tibbet's Corner roundabout is a large more intermediate stage roundabout; and is useful in
illustrating Positioning, again Signals and most importantly
Priorities and Emerging safely.
Areas to learn about Crossroads
It is crucial to find a set of crossroads
which are not too busy so we recommend the junction of
Westmead and Dover House Road. It a safe place
to explain how to negotiate four way traffic traffic and a
change in priorities. The Give way Lines are helpful in
explaining the extra safety observation applied at
crossroads. This crossroad is also useful to explain
Crossing on coming traffic whilst turning right. Which
could be either near-side to near-side or off-side to
off-side. To try a more intermediate level crossroad use the
junction of Putney Hill and Richmond Road. The principals of
the Yellow Junction Box can also be taught here.
Areas to learn about
Pedestrian Crossings and use of Signals
A good place to demonstrate
the rules and markings for crossings like Zebra Crossings is
Merton Road. And a drive along Roehampton Lane or Richmond
Road is an
excellent place to demonstrate Pelican Crossings and Puffin
Crossings. The schools are useful in highlighting Awareness
and Planning.
Areas to do reversing
exercises i.e. Manoeuvers
The Turn in the road exercise or
three point turn as its also known as is best demonstrated
in quietness of Parkmead. The Reverse around the
Corner exercise can be carried out where Parkmead meets
Dover Park Drive. And the reverse parking exercise also known as
parallel parking can be done in Westmead. Bay Parking
can be demonstrated in these roads also.
