Since 1999 NDS driving
school instructors have been successfully serving the Kingston
upon Thames and entire KT area with manual and automatic driving lessons. We have
put together some helpful information aiding the public in
developing their core driving skills and key driving
competencies. This information has been provided by our
Government Approved and Registered driving instructors. This
is a valuable resource that is normally paid for.
Areas to learn about driving
controls and moving off & stopping
It is always best for those
starting from the beginning to be relaxed and safe on a nice
quiet side road, there are many around Kingston. Many
instructors like using High Drive. This is in KT3, and
is close to Kingston Town Centre and only approx 5 minutes
away from Norbiton Railway Station, making it a convenient
location.
Areas to learn Left &
Right turns and emerging at T- Junctions
Our Instructors recommend doing
a circuit which ideally starts with a combination of repeated
left and right turns. We can do this on High Drive
using Branksome Way, Woodlands Avenue and on to Overdale
Avenue. Continuing on you can then turn right on to Oak
Road. At the end of Oak Road we can emerge right on to
Clarence Avenue and then turn right back on to High Drive. A
figure of eight can be performed to learn both elements; this
area is good for intermediate level learners and a good place
to learn Emerging, MSPSL and Creeping Forward from Give way
lines.
For an environment suitable for a
complete beginner we also recommend Ullswater Crescent in
Kingston Vale, only 3 mins far
from Kingston University Kingston Hill
Campus; at the end of the road we can turn left on to Derwent
Avenue leading back to Ullswater Crescent. The road
continues, naturally curving to the left building Steering control,
Accuracy
and Confidence. Following on down Derwent Avenue turning right
onto Ullswater Avenue we can then emerge and turn right at
the T Junction of Robin Hood Lane on to Windermere
Road which naturally curves right; we
then turn right on to Keswick Avenue then right at Bowness
Crescent leading back to Windermere Road turning right to Robin Hood
Lane and Left back to Ullswater Crescent.
Areas to learn about
Roundabouts
The roundabout where Derwent
Road and Grasmere Avenue meet is an excellent place to teach
about priorities and appropriate signals at medium and mini
roundabouts. The roundabout where Clifton Road, Park
Road, Manorgate Road, London Road and Kingston Hill come
together is a more intermediate stage roundabout; and is
useful in illustrating Positioning, again Signals and most
importantly Priorities and Emerging safely.
Areas to learn about Crossroads
It is crucial to find a set of crossroads which
are not too busy so we recommend the junction of Crown
Avenue, Branksome Way and Woodlands Avenue. It a safe place to explain how to
negotiate four way
traffic traffic and a change in priorities. The Give way Lines
are helpful in explaining the extra safety observation applied
at crossroads. This crossroad is also useful to explain
Crossing on coming traffic whilst turning right. Which
could be either near-side to near-side or off-side to
off-side.
Areas to learn about
Pedestrian Crossings and use of Signals
A good place to demonstrate the
rules and markings for crossings like Zebra Crossings is
Clarence Avenue. And a drive along Coombe Lane is an excellent
place to demonstrate Pelican Crossings and Puffin Crossings.
The schools are useful in highlighting Awareness and Planning.
Areas to do reversing
exercises i.e. Manoeuvers
The Turn in the road exercise or three
point turn as its also known as is best demonstrated in
quietness of Ullswater Crescent. The Reverse around the Corner
exercise can be carried out where Keswick Road meets Bowness
Crescent. The reverse parking exercise also known as parallel
parking can be done in Windermere Road.
Local DSA driving test
centres
According to the Driving
Standards Agency's resources (in order of proximity to
Kingston) these are the closest test centres to the KT1 area,
Note:
The test centre records shown below are the
average pass rates calculated by the DSA for the test centre
(AND NOT FOR ANY PARTICULAR DRIVING SCHOOL).
1. Tolworth.
Overall pass rate 05/06 43.85% - (not National pass rate)
2. Isleworth. Overall pass rate 05/06 42.73% - (not National pass rate)
3. Morden. Overall pass rate 05/06
49.06% - (not National pass rate)
4. Sutton, Surrey. Overall pass rate 05/06
43.70% - (not National pass rate)
THE PASS
RATES FOR NDS DRIVING SCHOOL ARE
CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN THESE. WE ARE PROUD TO SAY
THAT MOST NDS STUDENTS PASS IN THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT.
