Applying
for your provisional licence.
The
first thing you need to do before you can get into a car and start learning to
drive, is to have a provisional driving licence. To apply for this, you must
complete the application form D1 available from either the ‘Driver and Vehicle
Licensing Agency (DVLA) form ordering service’, or from your local Post
Office. It takes about 4 weeks for your application to be processed and for your
licence to be sent to you. You have to be at least 17 years old before a
provisional licence will be issued.
You can start taking driving lessons before
you take your theory test.
There is no restriction upon anyone learning to
drive as long as they have a provisional licence.
You cannot apply for the practical driving
test until you have passed
the theory test.
The theory test is taken at a different
center to
the practical test. The
links below tell you about the theory test
and practical test.
